I'm not saying we shouldn't have them in the rule book (they can be useful and attract many former 40k gamers), but do use the points system and if so, how strictly do you adhere to it?

In my games i don't really like using points, to me they seem to complicate things and lead to overly competitive style gaming. They also seem discourage originality when creating forces or scenarios for games. I do sometimes use them as a general guideline for the size and capability of forces, but usually it's just more fun to throw everything on the table and see what happens. What are your thoughts?

I use them as the basis for everything I create. I generally dislike games that do not use points. In fact, a "from the ground up" points system that lets me design all sorts of things is what attracts me to a game, as it allows me to be creative while preventing myself from going overboard. It allows two players to create something before hand using the same basic set of rules and then engage with some level of fairness.

In fact I almost rejected FAD until I found the points system; the random roll or just "picking from the list" was very uninteresting to me.

Doesn't really matter to me. Mostly we use points in my group, but personally, I like it either way. A balanced game is just as fun as playing the under/overdog.

We seldom use points although for out upcoming campaign game there will be a set number of points to "buy" from.

As we don't care to win as such but just go for fun games, it doesn't really matters if our armies are balanced.. as long as they make sense in their own rights.

apologies for being AWOL a bit. Real life has stepped in for a while, though I should back in proper business this weekend :)

Some people like the points as a yard stick, others like to use TO&E's or just set up what seems to work for both people.

The only thing we can all agree upon is probably that IF we are going to use points, they should be as balancing as possible.

Thats why the points formula is so obsessed with multipliers :) A lot of games makes it cheap to pile on multiple abilities to create super units, or fail to account for the fact that making a rifle squad capable of infiltrating is not as valuable as making a heavy weapons team do the same

That's something that attracted me to your points system instead of other's I've seen. If you ever do a generic "fantasy" one, I hope that'll carry over too.
