I do enjoy writing fluff, and I've started writing a little bit just for fun for my FAD forces. The game "world" I've set up is called The Waltz. This is a reference to Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz; one of the characters mentions that life is an endless waltz of War, Peace and Revolution, three beats continuing forever.

As of the moment, there isn't a lot there. My original idea was yet another setting with World War references, though it was intended to be a WW1-esque kind of world (monarchies and Empires and all that) combined with tech that ranges from WW2 to Ultra Modern, depending on army/faction. Ideally you'd hear/see about stuff like WW2-era US grunts with their old style rifles riding M113 APC's locked in deadly exchanges with guys using modern assault rifles coming into battle with WW1 inspired turretless tanks and VTOL aircraft. A cool hodge-podge explained with some kind of maybe believable fluff. No army lists up yet as there isn't a whole lot of "data" in a FAD army list. For the moment, a tad bit of fluff reviewing for clarity, interest level and overall cool would be much appreciated, as I am attempting to improve my writing ability/style.

Here's the home page:

Any "blue" link can be followed for more info. There's only one faction mentioned as of this moment, and it's the one I'm playing for now (Ethisian Advance Recon Corps). It's inspired by early WW2 era USMC in some ways, since they're a pseudo-elite branch stuck in combat with older tech gear. Also inspired a bit by the Force Recon in that they grew from a "watch and report" branch into a "watch, report, strike" branch. If that makes sense.

In a nutshell, they're Regular quality, steady fighters wearing Improved armor using SMG's with Experienced leaders. They're going to be backed by VTOL aircraft that are hybrid transports and close air support (upgraded Valkyries from Forge World). Their theme is ground infantry using short range weapons ("recon"). They get most of their heavy support from the air, though they do bring some ground support weapons in the form of SAWs and (probably) lighter mortars. Think 'nam style Air Assault infantry. Traits are undecided, as are personalities.

The "army" mentioned is the primary land/air fighting force, a lot more recognizable as a conventional military. They bring better armored infantry using better rifles (assault or maybe advanced) but are of lower standard ("conscript" quality, steady). They bring tanks (GW Leman Russ without a turret; HMG sponsons and a light cannon [the las cannon] with some rotation forward). Their air units are probably going to be "off map" if even present, as they have an "Army Air Corps" that uses fighters, bombers, etc as we're familiar. They transport in ground vehicles.

My main enemy player is using GW space marines as regular humans in oversized power armor using Gauss Rifles. These may be "backed up" with rabble or conscript quality guys that are probably Russians right out of WW2's battlegrounds -- low tech rifles. Think Knights and Peasants. May or may not change in the future, however.

Thought I'd share what I had so far to see what kind of feedback I could get, so that maybe it could influence me in a positive way as my project grows and evolves.

Thanks for looking!

M.

you know, this sort of setting is amazingly awesome. I've tholught about doing something similar. A great way to get a lot of mileage out of the amazing ranges of historical figures out there too

I've been working some on building out the Cyberia setting (slooooowly) and one of the factions I have in mind is a "old tech' sort of force. Lots of industry but not a lot of high tech gear. Mostly an excuse to use ww2 models alongside modern day Germans, cold war soviets etc :)

Gotta love it :p

My brother was interested in bringing WW2 style Americans against my EARC (and eventually E.A.) and a friend's power armored doom troopers. While the Ethisians are supposed to be pretty militarily powerful (I might give them an old pre WW1 style Empire when I start doing my map), they're not supposed to be the most high-tech in absolute terms. They will not have power armor or laser weapons, or even use "advanced assault rifles" as defined in the rules. I've considered giving them the most advanced aircraft though, as jet engines are (I think) supposed to be relatively recent inventions.

I created a little background for the guys I fight with: http://www.thecbg.org/wiki/index.php?ti ... e_Waltz%29

Now that I've told you the facts, how can I add flavor without stating "These guys are X, with a bit of Y."?

Updated homepage with better written and revised information:

http://www.thecbg.org/wiki/index.php?title=The_Waltz

Now featuring army lists for two factions:
http://www.thecbg.org/wiki/index.php?ti ... e_Waltz%29
http://www.thecbg.org/wiki/index.php?ti ... e_Waltz%29

A few changes have been made. The EARC is already a proven combat branch but with "recon" roots still. They have a single tank in their arsenal, a turret-less assault gun, gained because of their involvement in a few urban campaigns. It'll get shoe-horned into a mobile field gun as well.

They ARC is still using SMG's in an age where most armies are using semiautomatic rifles or have moved on to embrace the assault rifle, but they have the (eventual) air support back up and wear armor that is (so far) better than most of everyone else. Unarmored troops will probably become the norm in The Waltz, though I thought about writing in a stop gap between light armor (which I figure to be modern ballistic vests) and unarmored; a 1d6-1 "flak jacket" quality vest.

Any blue link can be followed. I've even added in some articles on individual weapons, like the D849 Submachine Gun and the R11 rifle.
